Sticky oil at oil fill cap

Hi sifus, I realise my bt have sticky black oil at the oil fill cap and the metal plate inside the cam cover. Do anybody know what cause this? can it be clean or washed? what need to be done? Not clean as the photo (sorry brother AE101-Wong, borrow you photo as sample)

I think you're referring to sludge, which is common on most engines especially Toyota if engine is not properly maintained/serviced.

The only proper way to get rid of it is to remove the valve cover and clean it using chemicals. While doing so, you might want to check on your head and valvetrain area as well to see if there's anymore sludge. If the entire head is covered with sludge, its best to do a top overhaul.

what do you mean by top overhaul? only overhaul the top part --> cam shaft, valve, ...... ??
 
sludge can be simply cleaned out by using a good engine oil, if the engine is okay generally, then no need for any overhaul
