Getting a router. need help

i have a desktop and few laptops at home. i also have 2 modems. so, i thought of getting a router. however, i am wondering is it possible to fix one of my modem to the desktop and the router to the modem? in other words, i want the desktop to be wired but the router fixed to it so that it can transmit wireless signal? possible? or must i buy the wireless thing behind the cpu?

get a wireless router with 4 lan ports
then setup like this

modem ---> router ---> pc + laptop

u can go for d-link, netgear etc..

avoid dlink 624+ at all costs
it will often disconnect
manufacturer defect
