Could Aventador be the new Lamborghini Murcielago

It appears that Lamborghini have filed a claim with the trademark office for the name ‘Aventador,’ leading to the mandatory speculation that it could be the name for the Murcielago’s replacement.

A select group of customers were treated to a preview of the new raging bull at Sant’Agata recently and word is that the Lamborghini Aventador, should it be called that, will mirror the Lamborghini Reventon in design, with a few tweaks here and there of course.

As expected, power will come from a 6.5-liter V12 pushing out 700hp to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, enabling performance figures in the 2.9-second range for the century sprint and a top speed of 350km/h.

Courtesy of the strict diet it has been placed on, the car won’t be a porker too, weighing in 227kg lighter than its predecessor while rigidity has been upped by a stonking 70 per cent.

Although the boys from Sant’Agata are planning to lift the lid on something at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show, we’re guessing it to be the Lamborghini Gallardo Performante, basically a Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera Spyder.

That fits in the with the timeline that we’ve all been expecting though, that the Murcielago’s replacement will be unveiled at the granddaddy of all auto shows, the Geneva Motor Show, in the March next year.

Just in case you were wondering, the heading picture is a rendering from Autoevolution.
