That's one way of doing it. But most pre-amps out there are not that great. Unless you get a good one like from Helix or Audiocontrol, then you might introduce aeroplane noise into the setup. And those two brands aren't cheap.if it is me, i'd just match the amps with the speakers max wattage & use a pre-amp to control the sound output & it will help to maximize ur crossover output, unless u r really 1 hella hardcore ICE person, then i'd go wit sifu Izso advise
Actually I just had a thought. Keep the current 2-channel to power the sub. Buy a component set for the front and one 2-channel to power it. Case closed.
