Wrap extractor for longer fan's motor lifespan (& reduce engine bay temperature)

Stock extractor (Wira) they have like a cover/heat shield that seats between the extractor and the aircond and radiator fans. Now I changed the extractor, the extractor is bigger than the stock one and seats closer to the fans. The mechanic I met advise me to wrap the extractor so it will reduce the amount of heat from the extractor reaching the fan's motor (longer motor life span).

How true is this? It will also reduce engine's bay temp right?

It might melt the fan since its plastic. Bigger and nearer to it right?

Seen many just left like that. If moving the air will cool the extractor. When fan runs it will do the same...Original is cast iron block...

this is how they do ceramic coating..

i think other parts also around that price.. cheaper if it's a simple plate like rocker cover.. (I THINK)

I think parts that easily get rusted is worth doing. Like non stainless steel exhaust and etcs.
Also reduced heat as claim by them other than protection alone.

Remember that the wrap will not hold tight forever. So schedule a long term check on it just to make sure.

I have seen proofs that extractor's heat can either

1) shorter life span of the electric fan motor (esp. the aftermarket fan has no heatshield).
2) warp the cage of the electric fan due to heat of extractor (again, the aftermarket's one made of low quality plastic)

My observation is based on NA cars, not turbo cars.

Anyway, the heat will not instant effect the fan. Takes some time to spoil the fan unit.

The gap (highlighted in red) between the motor and extractor is (for me) very close. Or maybe I just wrap that particular area of extractor which is closest to the motor? hehe no need to wrap the whole extractor?

I seriously think it will melt the fan since its plastic. How about making a custom heatshield.
Should be cheaper?

What is heat shield made from? Can take an aluminium piece and wrap with aluminium foil or what?

Jebatdex,

From the photo, I would recommend you to
1) wrap the extractor entire length. (fyi, 1 roll of wrap is about 20meter for about RM25. Maybe cheaper if you get discount. Need 2 roll to wrap it properly for your case)
2) raise the hood hinge, to let trapped hot air escape from engine bay (better result, DIY some louvers on the bonnet)


This would reduce heat built-up in the engine bay, and lessen the chance of melting the fan. The heat issue need to tackle bit by bit through trial and error.

been using aftermarket extractor for years now..
in jebatdex photo can see the gap between extractor & fan..
in my car gap cannot see anymore..like only few mm only..the metal cover behind fan motor also have to remove to clear the extractor..
i think wrap also the wrap cannot clear the gap..hahah..
time to change extractor la..will attach pic if possible..
