UMW Toyota Motor welcomes the recent National Budget announcement by the government on the extension and enhancement of tax incentives for hybrid cars effective from 1st January 2011 until 31st December 2011.

According to Mr. Kuah Kock Heng, President of UMW Toyota Motor, "We are very delighted with the support by the government, to extend the full exemption of import duty and full exemption of excise duty for Hybrid cars.“ Compared to the 2009 National Budget, import duties was given full exemption while the excise duty was given 50 percent reduction.

He also said, “Since the announcement, we have proactively reviewed our current Toyota Prius price, even though the effective date is on 1st Jan 2011. However, for the benefit of our customers we would like to announce that effective today, the Toyota Prius on the road price with insurance in Peninsular Malaysia is RM 139,900 (a drop of about RM 35,000 from the original price of RM 175,000).” The price in Sabah and Sarawak is about RM 141,500 due to higher logistics costs.

“With this, Malaysians can enjoy our most popular Hybrid car, Prius at a more affordable price. They can also benefit from the high fuel efficiency and at the same time contribute to lower the CO2 emission,” continued Mr. Kuah. The Prius is the most popular Hybrid car in the world with the worldwide sales exceeded 2 million units.

“It would be exciting to see more Toyota Prius on our Malaysian roads in the near future as more people are now aware about the effectiveness of hybrid technology,” concluded Mr. Kuah.

Still too expensive, actual price should only be around 70-80K RM with the current exchange rate.

This car good for environmental but doesn't do good for pocket money (myself)
The spare parts very expensive & hard to get.
The taxes on car might be reduce but how about the parts?

rm 70-80k? are u serious? what profit will toyota and the goverment get with this kind of amount?
Toyota already making profits when entering Malaysian shores... what we don't realized is that this monopolized industry here in Malaysia tend to make this car exclusive for their kind. Malaysian should speak out about this. More hybrid car means more intelligent, which also requires high knowledgeable mechanics to do the maintenance...

FYI this car is sold for only US$20-28K in the US market and that prices of course already include profits for Toyota and some tax and delivery costs.

should wait for the honda... see what can they offered
should ask honda to bring in the insight or the CRZ....

Prius is a freakin budget car in the US. Why is it a "premium" car with that almost premium price ? Buy altis is much better than buying this prius. Those who buy are just trying to seek attention ZZZ

Attention-seekers and Hollywood-celebrity-wannabes.

If those owners really wanna save a planet, shouldn't a K car be more petrol saving?

I really appreciate the lift of RM35k over the existing price man... I hate this government but I have to say that this time, they are making some good decisions. Many countries are already providing incentives for emission-less cars/activities. And now, it makes more sense to buy the prius as the savings from the fuel can more easily justify the higher price. With the previous price, it is ridiculous to aim for fuel cost savings considering the high price..

but then again... Shouldn't it be way freaking lower? RM135k is still expensive.... Is it priced like that also overseas? Not around 90k?

import duties was given full exemption while the excise duty was given 50 percent reduction

well... if the gov let imported cars to be sold below 100K i'm sure our national car's sales will be affected and alot of ppl going to loose their jobs and not to mention those upper level ppl will have to tighten their belts. All these duties, taxes are all to protect 'their' own people
