As we stand just 10 days away before the celebration of that special day of 10.10.10 tomorrow with special events planned worldwide, motorsport fans across the globe will have their own anxious wait for an exciting MotoGP race in Sepang.
On October 10, 2010, Sepang will be hosting the 20th edition of the Malaysian GP race and the 2010 Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix that could well become a special celebration round for two Spanish riders – Jorge Lorenzo and Toni Elias who are currently leading the MotoGP and Moto2 world championships.
After their sensational performance in the opening three quarter of the season, both Lorenzo and Elias could wrap up their championship battle in the two classes if results at the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi this weekend work in their favour.
If it does, both Lorenzo and Elias, who currently lead their closest rivals by 56 and 76 points respectively, would be in the driving seat for a celebration bash at the Malaysian GP, which is Round 15 of the world championship; leaving only three more rounds and a maximum of 75 world championship points for their rivals to vie on.
“Regardless of what happens, the 2010 Malaysian MotoGP world championship would definitely be a special and thrilling affair. We have lined up a host of exciting programmes to celebrate the event and the 20th edition of the Malaysian GP,” said Razlan Razali, event director for 2010 Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix.
A three-day event with the climax on Race Day on the special Sunday of 10.10.10, programs to hype up the event would commence immediately after the whole MotoGP community make their way to Malaysia after the race in Motegi. “They would start coming in Malaysia as early as Tuesday morning and some of the teams have already lined up special events for their riders with the fans at various locations around the city. For us at SIC, we would have a special homecoming party for our local hero Muhammad Zulfahmi Khairuddin on Tuesday,” said Razlan, who is also SIC Chief Executive Officer.
Riding for AirAsia Sepang International Circuit Racing Team, Zulfahmi grew up and lives in Kampung Bukit Canggang, which is just some 15 kilometers away from the circuit and making the upcoming Malaysian GP a true home race for him.
“I am sure that Zulfahmi is really looking forward to this race. All his friends and family members in Bukit Canggang and his fans throughout the nation will want to be there to cheer for him. We are expecting an even bigger turnout this year especially that we also have Mohd Zamri Baba racing in Moto2 as well,” said Razlan.
In conjunction with the 20th edition of the Malaysian GP, SIC would be organizing a special 20 Years of Malaysian GP Gala Dinner, which is expected to be attended by former MotoGP greats as well as the competing riders and team members.
“We have confirmation that the legendary Mick Doohan will be attending the dinner. Dorna is assisting us with the invitation. We hope to see all the Malaysian GP heroes there,” said Razlan, who would be attending the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend to personally invite all the key people of MotoGP.
Among the highlights of the evening, Razlan said, would be the official launch of 20 Years Malaysian GP commemorative book, which he said, would take readers in a journey through time throughout the 20 years of the Malaysian GP since 1991.
“The book would not just feature images of the key moments in Malaysian GP, but all the statistics and facts as well. It’s is edited by a highly respected MotoGP writer, Julian Ryder and the photos are provided by a well known photo agency, Gold and Goose. It’s definitely a good read and a must for any MotoGP fans,” he said.
According to Razlan, all the competing teams would also be having their promotional events throughout the race week. “There will be plenty of meet the riders sessions, organized by the sponsors, for the fans.
“But, on our side, we would be organizing the main one at the circuit on Saturday. All the MotoGP riders would be at our Welcome Centre in a special autograph session with the riders that day at noon.
“Fans coming to the event this year would also an abundance of choice for MotoGP souvenirs. For the first time this year, our SIC merchandise shop would be selling official MotoGP merchandise and official team merchandise from Rizla Suzuki, Monster and the special VR46 collection.
“We are also producing special souvenir items in conjunction with the 20th edition of the Malaysian GP. I am sure fans would love our special edition vuvuzela, which they can blow in support of their heros during the race,” added Razlan.
Another special highlight for this year’s event would be the Kid’s Pitwalkabout where children below 12 years old would be allowed to enjoy the exclusive experience free of charge. To be held on Friday, October 8, the session would also be opened to all ticket holders.
“The pitwalk about is always the star attraction in a MotoGP event – just F1. Fans can get a closer look at the bikes and perhaps, even meet some of the riders,” said Razlan, adding that SIC was also offering special starting grid passes, guided tour passes and ride in the MotoGP safety cars for lucky ticket purchases.
