How To Prevent Your Vehicle From Being Stolen

SECURE YOUR VEHICLE
- Lock your vehicle.
- Never leave the vehicle key inside the vehicle unattended.
- Never leave your vehicle’s engine running, even if you will only be away for a minute. Vehicles are commonly stolen at convenience stores, petrol stations, ATMs and outside house compounds when owners leave the vehicle engine running to run errands or to unlock house gates.
- Ensure your vehicle windows are properly closed up.
- Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. However, if you have to, place valuables out of sight in the boot. Ensure that no one sees you placing valuables in the boot.

PARKING
- Park in well-lit areas - vehicle theft usually occur at night under the cover of darkness.
- Park in attended lots – vehicle thieves do not like witnesses and prefer unattended parking lots.
- Park your vehicle in the compound of your house rather than outside. Lock both your vehicle and the gate for improved security.

SECURITY
- Professional thieves are able to steal any vehicle. However, you can make it difficult for them to steal your vehicle. The more layers of protection on your vehicle, the more difficult it is to steal.
- Your budget and personal preferences should determine how many layers of protection and which anti-theft devices are best for you.
- Generally available anti-theft devices are:

a. Engine immobilizers
b. Better door and ignition locks
c. Security patterned or coded keys
d. Radio/CD players with security code or removable face plates
e. Window etching
f. Car alarm
g. Steering wheel/gear/brake pedal locks
h. Tracking devices

Just to tell something regarding this issue. Currently, smart and hightech thieves do use devices to check if anyone place their laptop at the back of the car booth. So, its better not to place any handphones or laptop in the car, no matter its out of sight or not.

Unless towing your car away, they MUST break into your car before driving it away or stealing valuables.

Can't stop them from doing anything but at least, you KNOW when they do it.

Get a reliable 2-way security for your wheels.

Better to replace a broken window than to lose all all your precious valuables. Worst still, car gone forever.

- Protecting your car is an art. Knowing how to do it, is wisdom -

For the alarm, get those with movement/shock sensors.

What is b. Better door and ignition locks?

Steering release kit..so far only goods for non-airbag car. I hope your steering release kit has security features. Otherwise, the thief just comes with another steering and drives away.

If you do decide to leave your laptop in the car, remove it's battery. It's easier to carry the battery than the whole laptop. I do agree however that the best thing to do would be to take the whole thing down with you. A friend of mine has his laptop stolen from his car when he parked it outside of Maybank in Uptown around 10pm. He went into the bank for about 5 mins, came out and found that they had smashed his window. Another has his pinched at Desa Sri Hartamas (parking lot in front of Finnegan's), not exactly an inconspicuous area!!!

melvin, do you think the thieves would not have thought of that Mr. Bean solution already? Especially when they read this suggestion from these car forums? If they are professional enough, they would bring a steering wheel along.

Nowdays they don't steal anyway. They will just rob you anytime, anywhere once they eye you as their prey!

Prevention is to reduce the probability of having it happened on you. It would be great if there is "death penalty" on these people. Again, some poeple might say this is way too cruel even it is just a punishment. But try think twice, do you want the bad things happen on you? Some may even say look at those drug trafficker. There is death penalty but still got people trafficking drug. However, if there is a death penalty, then the chances of such having occur to you will be reduced to a minimum level.

Another option is to be a brave public citizen. If you see such things happen, then try to disengage them if you have the guts. However, sadly speaking not many of us dare to do tat especially these people have guns or parang.

Well, this is Malaysia. We not able to see cops everytime at every corner. My best advice is try to be alert at all times and think twice before u decide to park at a certain spot.

Note: Pls do not tell me that there are even worse places compare to Malaysia! If everyone thinks so, how on earth is our country going to improve by comparing with the worse??!?!
