The title of the world’s fastest road legal car was never easy to obtain, but one will instantly be an automotive legend once it manages to do so. Among those that had become an icon in being the fastest machines are the Jaguar XJ220 (343km/h), McLaren F1 (372km/h), and the Bugatti Veyron EB16.4 (408.47km/h). But what about the fastest convertible?

<a href="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/670x377image-7.jpg"><img src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/670x377image-7.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="337" /></a>

Although this title is also held by Bugatti’s own Grand Sport Vitesse with the ability to reach 410km/h, it has now been surpassed by a creation of a tuning company which is surprisingly based in the States. With a top speed of slightly less than the coupe version of 421km/h, this is the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder.

<a href="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/670x377image-5.jpg"><img src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/670x377image-5.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="337" /></a>

And the first thing that one could not help to notice is that it looks pretty familiar to a Lotus; which is not a surprise because the Venom GT Spyder uses a lengthened Lotus Exige chassis for the body. It was lengthened to fit in the massive Chevrolet LS-series 7.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with a colossal output of 1,244horsepower and 1,135lb-ft of torque. And as a comparison figure, the Venom GT Spyder could do a 0-320km/h dash in 15.9 seconds, which is eight seconds faster than a Veyron.

<a href="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/670x377image-8.jpg"><img src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/670x377image-8.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="337" /></a>

And the idea of making the Venom a convertible actually comes not from the tuning company, but from a singer which is Aerosmith’s frontman, Steven Tyler. There were some changes to the structure that had to be made for the Venom to be able to withstand high-speed runs, which had resulted in the rise of the overall weight to 1,244kgs. And that is where the Hennessey guys decided to raise the output of the engine up to 1,244horsepower to maintain their 1 horsepower per 1 kilogram power to weight ratio.

<a href="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/670x377image-4.jpg"><img src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/670x377image-4.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="337" /></a>

There will only be five Venom GTs built for this year, and Steven Tyler’s will be the only convertible among them. The price for this insanely-fast, lengthened Lotus? $1.1 million, or easily put, RM3.5million.
