The pick-up segment just got a new contender with Isuzu Malaysia adding to the D-Max line up with the 4x4 double cab Isuzu D-Max 2.5-liter Super Commonrail that features the advanced diesel engine that promises great fuel efficiency.

A new drivetrain is the only change to this model and the heart is the Super Commonrail diesel engine, the 4JK1-TC, that is one of the best selling 1-ton pick-up truck engines in the world with close to half a million units having been produced since 2005.

“The new D-Max is aimed at the smart motorist who appreciates the technological advancements made in pick-up truck technology yet demands its core strengths of versatility and toughness. Owners will find a very refined and smooth engine, impressive engine response and even greater fuel economy with the new D-Max,” said Takashi Hata, Chief Executive Officer of Isuzu Malaysia.

The company is expecting the D-Max with the new engine to help maintain their strong growth trend in the pick-up segment with monthly sales of 150 units of the new model adding to the current average monthly demand of 480 units.

Even though the only change would be the drivetrain, it is in itself a remarkable engine. It features a fuel, oil and EGR cooler to keep the engine running at its optimal temperature. Furthermore, the engine runs on a timing chain for reduced maintenance cost and reliability.

Power for the 2.5-liter oil burner stands at 114hp@3,600rpm and peak torque is a whopping 280Nm@1,800-2,200rpm. All that force reaches the four wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. Switching between four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive is taken care of by the Touch-On-The-Fly 4WD system that allows switching over at speeds up to 100km/h.

Pricing for the new model starts from RM82,155.40 for the solid-coloured garden variety spec. The premium spec will set you back RM88,411.40. If you're going for the metallic option on the colour swatch, be prepared to part with RM82,481.40 for the basic spec and the premium will go for RM88,737.40 (all pricing OTR w/insurance).

If you’re itching to get a closer look at one, the new model will be available at all Isuzu dealerships nationwide from 1 October 2010 onwards. In conjunction with the new model, Isuzu Malaysia will be offering a ‘Smart Saver’ package that allows customes that purchase a double-cab D-Max to a free Garmin GPS and a cash rebate as well. The offer stands until 30 November 2010.

Very little I see VR4 postings nowadays. Is everyone tired of this powerful engine? Anyways, I have a few topics for discussion for those interested. And, if anyone has anything to share, do post in this thread too.

1. Does your VR4 in a Wira feel a little laggish when you accelerate? When the accelerator pedals are pressed, does anyone experience an empty spot where the engine does not rev immediately. Very minimal.... ( this is on standstill and without any gears )

2. Does improving the...
