2008 Subaru Impreza WRX Sedan
The Subaru Impreza WRX Sedan has undergone many changes to it's front grille for the past few years. But none as dramatic as the one undergone by the 2006-2007 models. The 3-section grille resembles the intake and wings of a jet aircraft, paying homage to their grandfather company, the Nakajima Aircraft Company.
The controversial 3-section grille. Makes the Impreza look like a pig-mobile.
After receiving much criticism and controversy, the designers at Subaru decided to put the Impreza under the knife again. This time, they have sculpted a one-piece grille that looks like an eagle spreading its wings.
Much better.
The engine used is still the EJ255 but with emission and fuel economy improvements. The turbocharged 2.5-L produces 224hp at 5200rpm and 226 lb-ft torque at a very low 2800 rpm. The naturally-aspirated version will pump out 170hp and 170lb-ft torque.
The wheelbase of the 2008 WRX is longer than its predecessor by 3.7 inches. Double-wishbone rear suspension will also come standard. A wider and deeper trunk will satisfy any family wishing to go for an outing in the Impreza.
Handling-wise, the engine has been mounted lower and the resulting low-centre of gravity should make the Impreza handle better. Although the numbers are not in yet, a stiffer chassis is confirmed, along with optional vehicle dynamics control.
Recently, Japanese manufacturers have gone down the path of comfort for their economy/mid-sized sedans. A quick look at the new Nissan Sentra confirms this. As a result, taller and taller cars are being produced. Taller cars mean more headroom for European customers. Don't expect a 6-foot tall Caucasian to fit comfortably in a Toyota Vios.
Headroom aside, occupants also enjoy more front shoulder room, rear legroom, new standard side-curtain airbags and higher grade materials for the cabin.
With all this improvements, one may be wondering whether the Impreza is losing it's sporty touch. Gone were the aggresive styling that made previous Imprezas attractive as sports saloons. Previous Imprezas might look bold and loud but you know it's an Impreza when you see one. Now, it looks just like any sedan on the road! Let's hope that the STi version looks much better than this piece of...Japanese engineering.
