Jaguar C-XF concept : S-type successor<b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b><b></b>

These are the most revealing shots yet of one of the most important cars in Jaguar’s history. Stripped of most of their disguise while hot-weather testing in Death Valley, the XF and XFR (shown above) are slowly revealing their curves.

Jaguar will pull the covers off the finished model on the doorstep of its main German rivals, at September's Frankfurt Motor Show. Expect to see cars in dealers by early 2008, priced very close to today's S-type, starting from around £33,000.

So will the XF look like the concept?
Ultimately no. Few cars ever do but the car’s new transmission control has survived from concept to production.

In the face of ultra-tough safety tests, emission regulations and demands for more space, the Jag will end up being bulkier than the concept, and a good bit taller too.

The concept XF (C-XF), shown at the Detroit Motor Show at the start of 2007, has given us the best indication that distinctive LED lights(below) will run into the bootlid and be joined together by a chrome strip. Just don't expect any of the saggy-bottom look seen on the current S-Type.

The XF will offer familar choices under the bonnet: 3.0-litre V6 and 4.2 V8 petrols (naturally aspirated and supercharged for the 420bhp R model), and the impressive 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel.

On the left is the regular XF, whilst on the right is the lowered XFR which has more of its cooling ducts exposed for the hot weather testing.

In place of a conventional gearstick comes an alloy dial reminiscent of BMW's iDrive controller, which pops up about three-quarters of an inch when the ignition is turned on. The driver twists it to change gear on the six-speed ZF auto, and the P, R, N, D or S indicator above lights up to show which gear is selected. A red start button sits prominently above the gear selector.

Below the dial on the alloy plate of the JaguarDrive Selector are four buttons to control the traction and stability control, plus 'Sport' mode signalled by a chequered flag and Jag's ASL speed limiter. Finally, an electronic parking brake button nestles near the armrest, absent on this prototype.
