BMW has folded some of its motorsports programs such as Formula One and the World Touring Car Championship to save some coin for its coffers. The boys from Bavaria didn’t completely exit the motorsport stage though, they just decided to focus on smaller projects, like the German Touring Car series, DTM.

They have just announced their plans for the 2012 DTM season which will see three teams take a pair of BMW M3 DTMs each into battle on the track come next year. The teams are BMW Team RBM, BMW Team Schnitzer and Reinhold Motorsport. BMW Motorsport has worked with RBM and Schnitzer before but Reinhold is joining the fold for the first time. There won’t be a works team though directly under the BMW banner.

“In recent months we have worked very intensely on the DTM project. The concepts presented by BMW Team RBM, BMW Team Schnitzer and Reinhold Motorsport GmbH ultimately convinced us. This is an excellent team line-up for BMW. We are looking forward to cooperating over the coming years and hope to enjoy great success together,” said Mario Theissen, BMW Motorsport’s Director.

As they’re only targeting a 2012 start for their endeavours in the series, the cars are still undergoing development. In the meantime though, Team Schnitzer will be running two BMW M3 GT cars at several major endurance races across Asia and Europe.
