UMW has discontinued the 15w40 semi synthetic. At my service a few days ago they used 10w30 semi synthetic. Is this suitable for a 12 year old 1800cc engine. Outside sources tell me that the oil is too thin amd I could loose some oil and worse still the oil seal and maybe the gasket too can start to leak. Any thoughts on this.

Just use any 15W40 from reputable brands should be more than enough. I think mostly 15W40 is also just mineral, not semi synth. Or you can also use 10W40 semi synth, there are many choices available.
10W30 is a bit too light.

Aiya, if you refer to the manual, the recommended weights are 5W30, 10W40, 15W40.

and I'm using 5W40 on my 8 year old Unser without issues. Prior to this 5W30 also ok.

If you're worried about leaks and oil seals, stick with mineral. The minute you switch to Fully syn you're gonna spring a leak. Anyhow, have you done your top overhaul? If you have then you shouldn't be worried about leaks if you had all the seals changed.
