Drift through tilt shift video

The Formula Drift calendar might have come to a close for this season but in no way does that mean a shortage of cool videos or shots of the year’s action.

We’re pretty sure you’ve heard of tilt shift photography. Just in case you haven’t, it’s those pictures of real life scenes that look like they’re made from scale models.

There has been bucketloads of tilt shift shots of cars thus far, but as far as we can remember, none of a drifting event yet. Probably armed with that same lingering thought, MotorMavens lensman Joe Ayala used a tilt shift lens to shoot a stop-motion video of the Formula Drift round in Sonoma, California, a few months back.

The screen shot doesn’t even begin to do justice to the video. And if you’re just like us, you’d probably be imagining doing the same thing with your Hotwheels care when you were still a kid, minus the smoke from the tyres though.

How come they look like a bunch of damn realistic scale down models... is it the video capturing method? or editing effect? or it is totally natural...

Tilt + Shift lenses are available like most other camera lenses. It's used mostly in architectural work to manipulate 'perspective'. Like if you're taking a photo of a skyscraper at street level with a wide angle lens and you want to reduce the obvious 'perspective' effect ( where bottom of building looks wide and the top looks very narrow).

First time I see it used on video though. Cool.
