Ananda Krishnan

Tatparanandam Ananda Krishnan, or TAK, is currently Malaysia's as well as Southeast Asia's second (and the world's 147th) richest person, having a net worth estimated at US$4 billion. He is a regular feature in Forbes' Billionaire list.

Ananda Krishnan hates public exposure and is known to maintain a very low profile for a person of his stature. However, his hugely successful business activities always thrust him into the limelight and his name represents a huge business empire.

He was born in 1938 in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur's "Little India" to a Tamil immigrant family from Sri Lanka and is of Sri Lankan Tamil descent (Ceylonese/Jaffnese).

Ananda Krishnan studied at Vivekananda Tamil School in Kuala Lumpur and furthered his studies at Victoria Instituition, Kuala Lumpur. Later, he attended University of Melbourne, Australia for his B.A. (Honours) degree. Following that, Krishnan obtained a Masters in Business Administration at Harvard University, graduating in 1964.

Ananda Krishnan is married with three children. He is the older brother to fellow businessmen, Maya Krishnan and Gopal Krishnan.

After obtaining his Masters, Ananda Krishnan’s first entrepreneurial venture was in oil trading, setting up Exoil Trading, which went on to purchase oil drilling concessions in various countries. Later he moved into gambling (in Malaysia), stud farming (in Australia) and running a Hollywood cartoon studio. Soon, he diversified into a host of other business opportunities. In the early part of the 1990s, he started diversifying, in a big way, into the multimedia arena.

Currently, he has business interests in entertainment, space, oil, power, shipping, telecommunications, property and gaming. His companies operate in a most parts of the South East Asia. A quarter of his wealth comes from the gambling business (lottery, horse-racing wagering).

Said to have an extraordinary entrepreneurial flair and inventiveness, it was Ananda who sold former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on the idea of the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, the world's second tallest building, which he now part-owns.

Fortune magazine, in a 2001 article, called him "Kuala Lumpur's Mr Big".

He first came to prominence by helping to organize the Live Aid concert with Bob Geldof in the mid-1980s. In the early 1990s, he began building a multimedia empire that now includes two telecommunication companies - Maxis Communications and MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems - and has two communication satellites circumnavigating the earth.

He also effected the purchase of 46% of Maxis Communications, the country's largest cellular phone company, from British Telecom and AT&T for $680 million - raising his stake to 70%. Maxis has more than eight million subscribers, with more than 40% market share in Malaysia. Recently, Maxis has acquired Tamil Nadu's largest cellular phone company and has plans to expand to rest of India. Maxis is also under negotiation to buy over and expand an Indonesian cellular phone company.

He is also the head of Astro All Asia Networks Plc, the only company currently providing a DIRECT to HOME TV satellite service in Malaysia. http://www.astroplc.com/05/ (accessed 18th August 2006).It currently broadcasts to Malaysia and Brunei, and is under negotiation to broadcast to Indonesia.

In an agreement between Astro and SunTV Networks, Ananda plans to produce TV channels which cater to the Indian market, especially Tamil diaspora in countries such as US and Europe. Ananda also plans to offer TV services featuring Web-based interactivity.

Ananda Krishnan owns stakes in TVB.com (the interactive arm of Hong Kong's main broadcaster) and the Shaw Brothers' movie archives, which holds more than 800 movie titles. He also operates a chain of multiplex theatres.

He's now at 151st place in 2006 - FORBES

Another 2 more Malaysian i cant find lar, gimme the names .. and just billionaires .. dont gimme millionaire ok? , i seek the info's .. im very sleepy , its 0230hrs edi....

Tomorrow i add .. thnx

mmmuuuaahhh! g.nite..

Donald Trump not even in the list? he is what? a millionaire only?

Sorry buddie, its the actual source from FORBES.com :) .. and he's not in the list :)

Robert Kuok can consider migrated to HK oledi. His HQ now here oledi..thanks to our gomen policy to chase real entrepreneur away to keep their contractors....

I also born in JB educated in SG and now in hk....hope to have a achievement like him

The walmart family fall outside top ten oledi? the used to take the 5th to 10th place last time.....

Warren Buffet is no more No.2 by end of this yr.

85% going out to charity with most of it going to Bill & Melinda Foundation.:_:

But i read from magazines saying that the real "richest" person in the world is probly a drug and fire arms smuggler.....somewhere in columbia

but i think it might be one of those currupted political leader.....like the ex president Marcos in phillipines..his wife still duno how much he left behind after he passed away until today.....

and reports said suharto, the ex-indo president family are estimated to have USD$5billion dollars worth of asset but ppl guess that they could be having not less than USD$50billion in real figure.....

There are guesses on our Dr.M....but somehow i forgotten whats the figure oledi...

I still believe there's alot to be added into the list.
But they're either low profile or there's something to hide...that's why not listed....
Anyway, Sultan of Brunei was taken out of the list and previously was ranked no1 (not including heads of state whose wealth is tied to their position. I guessed all the oil rich countries would also gives u billionaires.
Terrorist (further example) racks in millions if not billions. Look at how Osama is spending....... *sigh*
kekekeke

Anyway, they're billionaire because of the mass assets that they own. Mainly their business which is worth millions. 1 day when their business gets into trouble and have to sell 10 cents per share; than most probably their status as billionaire would dropped to nil.........
Assets are volatile and sometimes can be over-exaggerate
Wonder would they be able to look only at cash.........hahahahaha

Sultan of Brunei are not that rich anymore because his brother evaporated billion of dollars of his wealth in a financial scandal few years ago.....they were even in debt previously...not sure whether the debts have been settled or not.

"But i read from magazines saying that the real "richest" person in the world is probly a drug and fire arms smuggler.....somewhere in columbia" - He's not richest, he's criminal terrorist and will be shot dead anytime :)

- Vincent Tan is out of the list .. he's not billionaire but millionaire
- Sultan of Brunei is also out of the list

If i'm not wrong, Vincent Tan is not even in the top 10 in malaysia....
not sure....just speculating

feel free to correct me

I have not gone thru' the Malaysian list yet, because Malaysian lists are changing often, new millionaires are rising.

So, i just woke up Billionaires thread ;)

but he was made bankrupt...
I forgot which year though.....
