The Shell FuelSave Research Report 2010 for Malaysia, released yesterday, indicates that Malaysian motorists are making a conscious effort towards fuel efficiency. According to this research, Malaysian motorists’ fuel efficient habits are closely linked to factors such as economic impact, environmental considerations and also the level of awareness on fuel efficiency habits. As a result, Malaysia has one of the highest percentages of highly active fuel savers among the 11 countries surveyed.

Shell has been actively conducting its global market research into drivers’ fuel saving habits and attitudes annually since 2007. This year’s Shell FuelSave Report surveyed 3,300 drivers in 11 different countries across Europe and Asia. The results revealed what drivers are currently thinking and doing to save fuel.

The insights on Malaysian motorists and our fuel saving habits were announced at the inaugural Asia’s Smartest FuelSaver, held at Sepang International F1 Circuit set against the backdrop of the Shell Eco-Marathon. The Asia’s Smartest FuelSaver, which brought together winners from six Asian countries in search of the most fuel efficient motorist, was flagged off by Mr Cesar Romero, Vice President, Shell Retail East and En Azman Ismail, Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd.

Shell has had a history of engaging motorists on how to save fuel since 2005 when Shell introduced its Shell FuelSave tips designed to help motorists adopt more fuel efficient driving habits. In 2006, John and Helen Taylor set the Fuel Economy Guinness World Record by travelling 28,970 kilometres (18, 000 miles), in one direction, using less than 40 tanks of Shell fuel. The Taylor’s are strong advocates of fuel efficiency and have conducted various FuelSave Academy’s. In 2009, Shell engaged Malaysia’s favourite TV Host / Actor / Model, Fahrin Ahmad as the Shell Malaysia’s FuelSave Ambassador with the aim to inspire as many drivers as possible to try and save fuel by choosing the right fuel and adopting the right driving style with the Shell FuelSave tips.

Last year, Shell Malaysia launched their most advanced fuel economy - Shell FuelSave 95 formulated to help motorists save up to 1 litre of fuel for every full tank by reducing energy loss in the engine by lubricating where your normal engine oils can't easily reach. Shell then embarked on a nationwide 1 litre Challenge which tested participants on their various fuel saving methods, to see how far they can go on just 1 litre of Shell FuelSave petrol.

The key highlights of the Shell FuelSave Research 2010 are as follows:
• More Malaysian drivers are conscious of their fuel economy today moving the needle from 32% in 2007 to 68% in 2010
• Malaysia outperforms the rest of the world with 85% drivers sharing believing that being fuel efficient is an important way to use resources in a sustainable way. The global average is 67% of drivers.
• Malaysian fuel savers take, on average, 8.9 actions to conserve fuel, the highest average among all countries surveyed.
