There was a time where the hybrids were generally classified as something slow, sluggish and have no characteristic whatsoever to be labeled as something “sporty”. But that is just the past, and now the hybrid technology have already been adopted by a number of auto manufacturers around the world, and coming out with something incredible with the technology like the Audi R8 E-Tron, which managed to lap the Nurburgring in 8:09 minutes. And now, Lotus is one step closer to coming out with one of their own with the Evora 414E.

With the concept unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the Evora 414E Hybrid is Lotus’ attempt in producing a hybrid sports car, which is now going through a smooth and steady phase in entering the production line as the pre-production version is now being tested. This hybrid gets its power from a pair of electric motors mounted on the rear wheels, connected by a range extender which is a 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine that acts as a generator to feed the motor and also to recharge the batteries.

The two motors provide 207hp (152kW) each, which explains the 414 moniker. And with 295lb/ft (400Nm) of torque coming from each of them, this Evora has a massive power of 590lb/ft (800Nm) in its disposal. With this much power, it gives the 414E a 0-100 time of less than four seconds and could reach a top speed of 210km/h. To preserve the sportiness in the 414E, they had a simulated paddle shift gear change to give out split-second gear changes, mimicking a dual clutch transmission.

So, Audi and Lotus had joined the hybrid game with some impressive lineup. I wonder who’s next in line, Lamborghini perhaps?
