Dr Mahathir hospitalised after suffering heart attack

Update by The Star Newsdesk

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) after a mild heart attack early Thursday morning.

According to a statement by IJN, Dr Mahathir had complained of mild chest pains in the early hours of Thursday

He was then admitted into the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) for observation.

“His condition is stable and he is expected to be kept under observation for one week’“ the statement added.

Dr Mahathir, 81, had a coronary artery bypass surgery in 1989.

He has been having his regular medical check-ups at the IJN.

He was last admitted to IJN in December 2005.

“Dr Mahathir is advised to rest and thus, will only receive visits from immediate family members,” the institute said.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was among the first government leaders to visit Dr Mahathir, spending less than 15 minutes in the hospital.

Abdullah did not speak to reporters on his way out. He, however, put his palm to his tilted face in a gesture indicating that the former prime minister was sleeping or resting.

The International Herald Tribune newspaper reported earlier this week that Dr Mahathir's doctors have told him about three blockages in his heart.

It was the first public indication that the elder statesman was not well even though he has appeared robust and attended public functions regularly.

Dr Mahathir's son Mirzan said his father suffered mild pain on the left side of the chest early Thursday and was rushed to hospital.

"He is stable now," Mirzan said.

The heart attack occurred soon after he returned from a trip to New Zealand on Wednesday night.

based on AUDI-VW group history of maintaining brand under their name they seems not to just rebadging their cars into brand under them (in this case proton) but tend to encourage the brand under them to develop their own designs....but most of the mechanical component is supplied by them....hmm...for example SEAT and Skoda....correct me if im wrong....

haha i dont fkin mind a rebadged golf gt just as long it has its turbo and super charger in it lol

say bye2 to malaysian engineers...no point in taking any automotive eng anymore for malaysians..since we'll be an import only country..we will never be like us or japan that produce our own goods..just import like indonesia and filipina...

hmmmm...ride bikes anyone..all become rempits like poor third world countries..good job porklah..

in case all of you are in dreaming mode...our FDI is lower than indonesia for the first time in history!economy is down the drain..this is not like the last 97 recession wher whole S E A is effected..this is just malaysia undur our ALIM porkLOH

remember..noew we are worse than indonesia...our FDI is lower than them...just wait a few yeras..could you afford anything less than a ex5?

i donno bout the details but... it seems like selling away 'my son' to others... instead of hiring a tuition teacher to teach/guide him...

wat r they thinking? sigh... this country is getting worse every single day...

it not like there were no tuition teacher for over 20 years. how about the initial years where the teacher(s) were a certain "mitsui" on how-to & the concept of building-in stages (there was a term for it) from toyota?

as someone now realise (vendor)

"it is better to have a piece of a very large cake then to have a whole very small cake."

it not like it's not been done before (perodua), the man-in-the street benefits. the manufacturer benefits. it should be a win-win situation over long term.

probably best that we should not be myopic on this.

yea true, i understand & i agree with u saying about Perodua, but... wat we wanted to do... to create, at the 1st place of building a own malaysian brand with all malaysian made, R&D product has been throw away after this... yea, this might b also a 'win' for local malaysian consumers... but... dont u think tat we lost something even bigger? even more important?

can we get de 51% back after this brand has been developed? has been up to some standard?

or, by the time, some big share holders wud sell their shares away & get some quick money?

its been 20yrs... Proton has been manufacturing cars for 20 bloody years... but... how come... ppl whos in control of this proud malaysian brand cannot do something even better? look at Hyundai, look at KIA. see hows their market now... they are well accepted brand in US, joins car shows with new concept cars every year. but wat hav we done??

cant we c tat our goverment jus no how to get fastest return? quick money? but dont want to put more effort? does this help? nope... i dont think so...

I can't believe that there are people against this. Can't u see there is no point having a Malaysia controlled carmaker company that manufactures low down quality cars that can only sell in Malaysia? Or would u rather see VW's participation in the company so that proton can produce much better quality cars with up to date technology that not only can be sold in Malaysia, but worldwide? We can't be 'Juara Kampung' forever. People buy national cars because they are forced to. I know I'll be proud of Proton the day Jeremy Clarkson makes a praise of a Proton car on television, rather than making fun of it, even though VW has a big part to play in it.

Atlast..this is the first step to become a better car manufacturer..
there is nothing wrong by being controlled by VW...they have already done some great jobs with lambo..skoda..audi...
VW will bring quality , technology and reliability...

im not against the move... ofcos i would like Proton to produce much much nicer, more powerful, better quality for us... u & me & for all... i never said tat they shudnt do this...

wat i meant was... why cant they learn hard & do something themselves at 1st rather than selling away or let ppl control?

spent so much money on our car industry but came out with ONLY bad quality cars?
yea, u & me wud b happy with VW coming... but... think from the other side... "did they learn their mistake?" or... now... VW come in is to 'cover their mistake over the past 20yrs'?

i just hope Proton can get better... cos im also a malaysian tat love this country... i jus hate those selfish ppl who only cares about their own, their pocket...

reedoor:

I get your point. But u and I both know that Proton will never ever be able to accomplish this by themselves. Simply because they tend to close both eyes as long as their cars can move when customers take it from their showroom, and the G put on high taxes for imported cars. I think the first thing VW must do when they come into the picture is to set the real standard for Proton's vendors and scrap them if they can't comply because they are not VW's relatives and friends. And also to set a higher standard for the overall build quality.

Peace and Cheers.
