This is also the first time that the PETRONAS Syntium Proton team is running 3 Proton Impians since 2002. The opening two rounds saw Michael Briggs and Fariqe Hairuman finish on the top step of the podium with a second and third place finishes in both races of the opening round of the championship.<br><br>Qualifying<br>The 2006 Championship season sees a change in the qualifying format with a single qualifying session for both races for the weekend. Former BTCC pilot, Fariqe Hairuman clocked 2:20.8s ahead of team mate Mashlino Buang. Following that, coincidentally Michael Briggs of Team PSP went out together with Franz Engstler in the BMW. Michael was quicker in his single flying lap and held the pole position over Franz with 2:20.6s. The BMW came into the pits to change tyres and went out to secure a faster time. The exciting qualifying session ended with Franz on pole, Michael second on the grid followed by Fariqe and Mashlino in third and fourth, respectively..</p><p><img border="0" src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/features/afos_sepang_2006/wongsw/DSC_9621a.jpg" width="600" height="390"></p><p>Race 1 - M. Briggs (2nd), F. Hairuman (3rd), M. Buang (4th)<br><br>Sunday’s first race started without any incidents. Piloting the newly built Proton Impian, Michael stayed with the BMW throughout the 10-lap race. The attention fell on the two young Team PSP drivers who were battling for third and fourth place. Fariqe and Mashlino remained bumper to bumper for six laps, pitting their skills and wits against each other whilst displaying great sportsmanship. In lap 6 Fariqe was able to carry more speed into the first turn and overtook teammate Mashlino who braked much later into the corner. The race ended with Michael in second position and Fariqe claiming the final podium position. Mashlino finished in a strong fourth place.<br><br>Race 2 - M. Briggs (2nd), F. Hairuman (3rd), M. Starting with the reverse grid for the top six finishers from the first race help put Mashlino third on the starting grid. Fariqe and Michael were in fourth and fifth place respectively. As the 4 red lights goes off, the 3 Impians were able to make the most of a good start and went into the first turn with 6 cars together in a line.<br><br>The race continued with an epic battle between the remaining two PSP team drivers against the BMW of Franz Engstler with both Impians leading the race for 6 laps. The Impians had to vigorously fend off the charge of the BMW throughout the 6 laps, making the most of the car’s advantage in the corners. However, with only 4 laps remaining, the BMW was able to pip the two Impians and took the lead ahead of Michael Briggs who finished race 2 in second. Fariqe claimed his second third place finish with a third place finish. <br><br>David Wong, Team Principal, said:<br><br>“The team’s portfolio is greatly increased this year with 3 Proton Impians running in Division 1. I am very happy to see our 2 young drivers expanding on their potential in this weekend and having our 2 Impians switching as race leaders in the second race.”<br><br>Michael Briggs said:<br><br>“This is a very interesting race after a 3 year hiatus from racing. I really enjoyed the race! The Proton Impian is an incredible machine, a great platform for younger drivers to learn and stretch their capabilities further.”<br><br>Mohd Fariqe Hairuman said:<br><br>“It is very welcoming to have Michael back in the PETRONAS family. Together we have gone through many setup changes and driving style and it undoubtedly raised the Team’s performance portfolio.”<br><br>Mashlino Buang said:<br><br>“I enjoyed the battle of wits and skills with my team mate in Race 1, but unfortunately the racing incident in the second race prevented me from putting my car through its paces. Nevertheless, I am happy for the team’s results this weekend and look forward to the coming rounds.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p><b>FORMULA V6 ASIA BY RENAULT SEPANG 2006</b></p><p><img border="0" src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/features/afos_sepang_2006/wongsw/DSC_9724a.jpg" width="600" height="390"></p><p>BITTER SWEET WEEKEND FOR CHANDHOK AT AFOS<br>14/5/2006<br><br>SEPANG (May 14, 2006): It was a bitter-sweet start for Indian ace Karun Chandhok in the Formula V6 Asia by Renault Championship as he claimed one victory and watched another slip away at the Sepang International Circuit today.<br><br>The Team E-Rain driver was in superb form during the Super Sprint race in the morning and cruised to victory in the 12-lap event. He was followed closely across the chequered flag by Hanss Lin of Taipei while Bahrain’s Hamad Al Fardan completed the podium. Al Fardhan of Team Meritus was second while American Seth Ingham of CT Motorsport finished third.<br><br>“I honestly don’t know what happened. I was leading comfortably but when I tried to engage the clutch, something gave way and the engine died on me,” said a visibly disappointed Chandhok.<br><br>“Everything was going so well, I set the fastest lap (2:00.374s on lap 10) and had a 10 second lead but that’s racing. Seth Ingham (US) CT Motorsport 33:16.657s<br> </p><p> </p><p><b>PORSCHE CARRERA CUP ASIA SEPANG 2006</b></p><p><img border="0" src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/features/afos_sepang_2006/andygoh/DSC_4060a.jpg" width="600" height="399"></p><p>O’Young’s Perfect Mother’s Day Gift<br>14/5/2006<br><br>Team Jebsen’s Darryl O’Young grabbed his second victory of the day, clinching Round 4 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit, and immediately dedicating his double wins to his mother. O’Young is proving almost unbeatable with three wins out of four races so far this season.</p><p>Second was fellow Hong Kong driver Matthew Marsh of Gates GR Asia after a hard-fought battle with O’Young at the front of the chasing pack. Third was series newcomer, Japan’s Kazuyuki Nishizawa of Tomo Racing, notching up his first podium finish of the season, ahead of team mate Shinichi Yamaji.</p><p>Pole sitter O’Young lost the lead to Marsh off the start, only regaining it on the penultimate lap of the 10-lap race. The pair enjoyed the duel, although their off-track friendship was nowhere in sight: “This race was a lot tougher (than Round 3). Matthew drove well and defended well. I’m not used to Michelin tyres, but now I am becoming more accustomed to them, I’ll be a lot quicker!” he vowed.</p><p>Cref Motorsports’ Keita Sawa, starting from the back of a grid following a penalty from race officials for his last-minute passing maneuver in the previous round, drove a phenomenal race to finish 5th ahead of Team Vertu’s Nigel Albon who set the fastest lap of the race and had a thrilling battle with the Japanese driver. SCC Racing’s Charoensukhawatana Nattavude, 5th on the grid, was up to 4th by the end of lap two, but a spin on lap 7 put him back and he finished the race in 9th.</p><p><img border="0" src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/features/afos_sepang_2006/wongsw/DSC_9267a.jpg" width="600" height="390"></p><p>Hong Kong driver Alain Li’s unlucky weekend didn’t improve when he was left stationery on the grid at the start of the formation lap and started the race from the back of the grid for the second time today. However, after a second phenomenal effort, he worked his way through the entire Class B pack to finish a creditable 10th overall.</p><p>In Class B it was newcomer Rusty French of Australia who took the win having leapt into the lead on the opening lap from 4th on the grid, followed by Taiwan’s Max Chen and Dr. Toshihide Hashimura of Japan. Fellow Australian Geoff Morgan, who had taken Class honours in Round 3, was involved in an incident on the opening lap and the resulting damage put him out of the running. Said French: “The race was very good and I’m delighted with the win. It’s my second time at Sepang, and this was good, clean racing. I was in 4th off the grid and then got in front of Chip (Connor). There was a bit of pushing and shoving. Geoff (Morgan) was in front and got caught up in the fray. I was behind Dr. Hashimura and saw somebody hit him. I saw his car was very slippery so I managed to overtake, and then he passed me again! Eventually I got by and he gave me room to pass. From there I nearly caught Rusty but there weren’t enough laps!” he said.<br><br>In Class A, O’Young’s wins – three out of the four rounds so far - put him at the top of the championship leaderboard - exactly where he had vowed to put Team Jebsen prior to the start of the weekend - 12 points ahead of Yamaji. Marsh’s successful weekend means he trails Yamaji but just two points in third. In Class B it is French who tops the leaderboard, a single point ahead of William “Chip” Connor, while Toshiya Ichiraku and Chen are joint 3rd on 10 points.<br><br>The thrilling Porsche Carrera Cup continues next month with Rounds 5 and 6 to be held at Beijing’s Goldenport Circuit. In a change to the provisional calendar, Rounds 10 and 11 on October 20 to 22 will be held at Southern China’s Zhuhai International Circuit.<br><br>Supporting the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia are two of the most recognised names in international motorsport, Mobil1 and Michelin. Full of determination and displaying true grit, the Australian pushed ahead to earn three podium finishes.<br><br>In his first race, Abay suffered a poor start and had to fight his way through the pack to cross the finishing line in third place.
