The Renault Alpine A110 has been the French auto manufacturer’s shining star back in the days when it swept a great number of titles in rallying back in the late 60s and 70s. It was only until the emergence of the Ferrari-powered Lancia Stratos that the Alpine’s march was brought to a stop, giving way to the focus-built machine that packed a serious firepower under its bonnet. Even so, Renault has been trying to put the Alpine name back into life for years, until they had finally came up with a concept version called the Renault Alpine A110-50.

Same name except for the “50”? That is because this concept pays the tribute to the Alpine A110, which has just recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. And there is no better way for a car with such strong connection to rallying to celebrate this special occasion other than to prove that it is still lively while going through the twists and turns.

RENAULT ALPINE A110-50 - The movie with Jean Ragnotti - YouTube

This brings us to the frozen roads near the Renault Alpine Research Center where the new Alpine A110-50 was put into the hands of Jean Ragnotti, a former French rally driver who once conquered the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally in a Renault 5 Turbo. He is challenged by a younger version of himself, driving the original A110 that the 50 pays tribute to.

The Alpine A110-50 is powered by a 3.5-liter mid-rear mounted V6 that produces 400 horsepower which is paired with a F1-derived semi-automatic six-speed sequential gearbox. Inspired by the DeZir concept, this one is totally not another one of today’s cars as it does not even come with ABS or even traction control! It seems like even after all those years, Ragnotti’s talents and reflexes are pretty much as sharp as it was back then. In these twisty roads, a minor mistake is more than enough to cause a major tragedy.
