The go-kart circuit at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) was recently refurbished and has been relaunched together with a new operator in charge that will now co-manage the go-kart circuit with SIC.

Designed by renowned Formula One track designer Hermann Tilke, the man responsible for the layout of SIC’s main track as well as other tracks on the Formula One calendar, the go-kart track is 1.247km long and 10 meters wide with 11 corners connecting it all together. The tarmac used on the track surface is exactly the same as that used on the main track. Part of the refurbishments included the setting up of complete new tyre barriers, resurfacing the track and installation of a better drainage system. Even the karts are brand new and include two-seater karts for parents to take their little ones out for a spin.

As mentioned, the new operator of the track will be City Karting Events.

“As the home of motorsports in Malaysia, we realize that we play a big role in developing motorsports in our country. The go-kart track is a perfect avenue and a safer option for beginners and youngsters in the racing industry, while helping them to develop skills such as sportsmanship and competitiveness. Furthermore, compared to advanced types of racing, it does not require a significant amount of money to get started,” said Datuk Razlan Razali, Chief Executive Officer of SIC.

Razlan also went on to explain that SIC now has value-added services as part of its plan to attract the public to the track everyday and not only during events, “As we all know, SIC plays host to two of the most glamorous racing events in the world, namely the Formula One and MotoGP, apart from numerous exciting races on a smaller scale. But not many are aware that we also provide other exciting activities for the family and the corporate sector such as the Driving Experience, Track Days, daily Circuit Tours, bicycle rides on the Motorcross track and many more teambuilding activities. We are also fast becoming a venue of choice for lifestyle events such as corporate dinners and concerts because of the vast space available and the uniqueness of having an event here.”

The relaunch of the go-kart track saw Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, the Minister of Youth & Sports present as well as Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir, the Chairman of SIC. A number of celebrities were present as well, such as Fahrin Ahmad, Aqasha, Joey G, Alan Yun, Steve Yap, and Jacky Kam.

SIC also hosted 20 orphans from the Pusat Jagaan Baitus Sakinah in Sepang. The kids were given the opportunity to have a few laps of the track in the new karts.
