Guys, I found this website which is selling some sort of piggyback device for proton cars.

http://m-99.co.uk/Superchips_Alternative/P...re_power_f.html

Below is what I copied from that website:

This simple, yet effective unit will allow you to boost the power output of your Proton engine, without sacrificing reliability or comfort. It consists of a small electronic device that is inserted between your Protons air sensor and the ECU. This is also know as a 'piggy back' device as it is external to the main processing unit (the ECU). You will feel the gain instantly, no fooling around or expensive tuning necessary. This unit will work with all Proton vehicles equipped with electronic fuel injection. 99% of Proton cars manufactured after 1988 are equipped with electronic fuel injection.

Here is how it works : You have probably heard of performance eprom chips (Superchips, BBR Starchip etc). These chips consist of a stock computer program that has been altered to inject more fuel into the engine under acceleration. Timing curves are commonly also adjusted consequently. These chips can be found to be quite effective, but are also very expensive - costing normally from £200 up to £1500 ! they also require plenty of time, specialist tools and occassionally soldering to fit. Our 'piggy back' Mod Chip on the other hand will alter the fuel and timing curves in a very similar way to the eprom chip, but without even having to open the ECU. How does it do that ? By fooling your cars computer and letting it think that your Protons engine is sucking in air at a different temperature. Your computer will respond and increase power !

Lets just put it this way. Assuming we aren't even bashing protons, no chip in this planet will get you 20hp to an engine. I couldn't care less if it was an Rb26 or 2jz. I'm no pro of high hp cars, but I'm a regular with 300-350hp cars. A standalone might get you there and even that is doubtful. A modified chip? Bah i will pay up to 5k for a modded chip if itould squeeze another 20hp and some torque gains and dump my Motec into the dustbin.

for some european turbocharged cars, 20+ hp is possible with just a chip.

I've not much experience, but I'm familiar with the Audi A4 and the volvo 850 T5, as these cars are very "conservative" with their factory tuning.
Just a little change with the timing, fuel injection, and incerase boost will do the job.

A lot of european cars would not go for standalone because of the difficulty involved.

But I do agree with you that 20+hp with just a chip in a NA sounds too good to be true.

Cheers

i do agree...
its very difficult to get 20hp increase for NA engines even if u change some parts(i.e filters, ignition, full exhaust system) in the engine....
a piggyback that does so...hard to believe

as Element said, a fren of mine instaled motec in his GTi and managed to squeeze about that figure but at a cost of about 15K... thats with full exhaust mode B)

Most stock Continental engines with significant hp gains after rechipping is due to the fact that the engine to be rechipped was hp-limited from the factory anyway.

The best example is the 1.8 4-pot turbo on the VWs, Audis and Skodas. The same engine ranges from the dismal ~150hp on the A4 to the not-too-bad ~240hp on the Quattro. You'll find that rechip options abound for the 150 spec engine but are all too common on the 240 spec.

Boogy, for these european turbocharged cars that you have mentioned, a chip can add 20hp due to a simple factor. These cars are limited from the factory. The stock ECU is there to retard the settings to have a better reliability for factory cars & also maintain emission standards. I ain't bashing you, just replying to your theory.

What a crock of shit. No EMS upgrades whether standalone or piggy-back gives u instant 20hp gains without other mods. Expect 5-8hp in general. What Superchips does is takes your stock chip, copies the mapping then slightly tweaks it for some gains. You could do the same with a MatSpeed J5 or Apexi SAFC for that matter.

The self-styled world cup of motorsports, the A1GP, had a decent formula that could have seen it reach that status had the spec-racing series stuck around longer. It pitted national teams against each other with identical Ferrari-powered chassis on circuits all around the world. Nonetheless, financial turmoil never really left the series and it was liquidated at the end of the 2009 season.

Since the series...
