At this day and age where equality of the sexes is a more widely accepted concept, it is time to put to rest the foolish notion that only men can be Harley bikers.
<!--more-->These were the sentiments shared by Harley-Davidson Kuala Lumpur, as it supports the official launch of the Harley Owner Group’s “Ladies of Harley” at the Concorde Hotel in conjunction with HOG’s Annual General Meeting 2012.
Yang Berbahagia Datin Noor Azah Abd Aziz, the wife to Dato’ SM Zulkifli SM Amin, Group Chief Operating Officer of NAZA Group of Companies, officially launched LOH during the dinner event aptly called “Glamours in Harley – A special night dedicated to the Ladies of Harley”.
Four hundred fifty guests in Harley attire including HOG members and spouses, celebrities and media joined the event and were served with sumptuous Chinese dinner. Three members representing true Harley fashion took home prizes for best dressed. The guests were entertained by no other than Awie, a Harley rider himself, and a special performance by a Dato David Arumugam impersonator. Two legendary guitarists – Joe of Wings and Man Kidal – closed the event by playing the song from the famous group Van Halen.
The Ladies of Harley (LOH) was established in Malaysia in 2010 to honour the involvement of women in local Harley-Davidson activities, events and adventures. Numerous Harley Owners Group (HOG) Chapters all over the world have celebrated their female riders, fans and supporters with the creation of the Ladies of Harley network.
Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin stated that HOG members are the ambassadors of the brand in Malaysia and that women are an integral part of the local Harley family.
“As the dealer for Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Malaysia, we recognize the importance of the Harley Owners Group in promoting the lifestyle and camaraderie that fit hand-in-hand with ownership of a Harley. Over the years, we have seen more females buying and riding Harley and participate in Harley activities, proving that the Harley way of living does not only develop brotherhood, it fosters the nature of family. We are delighted to officially announce the creation of the Ladies of Harley in recognition of our female counterparts and certainly look forward to organizing and supporting more events exclusively for women,” stated Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal.
Locally, the group currently consists of more than 30 vivacious women who own and have engaged in a variety of HOG events, including organized family rallies and outings, the National HOG Rally 2011, as well as activities catered specifically for ladies such as spa rides to which they travel in true Harley style.
“For years, ladies have been immersed in the world of Harley-Davidson; participating in activities as bikers or pillion and advocates of the unique lifestyle. Through the Ladies of Harley, we hope to clear up the misconception that only men enjoy the Harley way of living and loving life. As word spreads and awareness of the group increases, I have no doubt we shall be joined by many more female Harley enthusiasts,” shared Suhana Bt. Mislan, Ladies of Harley spokesperson.
How does one join the Ladies of Harley?
Any woman who owns/purchases a Harley bike is eligible and is simply required to register as a HOG – Malaysia Chapter member (which automatically lists them as a LOH member and offers them 1 year free membership, following which an annual membership fee will be charged.)
So what if you don’t own a Harley but enjoy the thrill of being a back seat passenger? No problem, just get a fully fledged HOG member to nominate you as an Associate Member and pay a nominal annual fee.
The Ladies of Harley is not a separate entity from the Harley Owners Group – Malaysia Chapter. Therefore LOH members are entitled to all the same benefits and privileges enjoyed by HOG members.
Ladies of Harley membership also allows the member to participate in all LOH activities at various HOG rallies and events. There is no additional fee to be a Ladies of Harley member. Ladies of Harley offers members a special vest with an embroidered patch and a pin during the first year of membership. Each renewal year, LOH members will receive an LOH pin indicating the year of membership.
The active members of LOH are a group of women who enjoy organizing and participating in social, travel and charitable events resulting in everlasting friendships, where laughter is heard and memories are made. LOH has something to offer everyone.
The members of LOH run their own meetings and appoint their representative, the “LOH Officer” as part of the Committee in the HOG Committee to organize activities in which both ladies and men can participate.
