We have just returned from a trip to Sabah where UMW Toyota Motors Sdn Bhd launched the latest addition to the most popular pick-up family in Malaysia - the new Toyota Hilux 3.0G.

Built for 4x4 enthusiasts looking for a more challenging driving experience and more power, the new Hilux Double Cab is equipped with a powerful 3 liter diesel engine with Variable Nozzle Turbo (VNT).

Unlike other Hilux models that are built locally, the 3-liter is a CBU unit built in Thailand. Visually there's almost nothing to differentiate the new 3-liter from its lesser sibling, the 2.5-liter variant; the real difference lies under the hood. The large capacity powerplant provides 161hp available at 3,400rpm and a generous 343Nm of torque available from just 1400rpm, plenty of power to lug all your equipment in the flatbed that also just happens to be the largest in its segment.

Ensuring the driver is never power starved, the Variable Nozzle Turbocharger works to control airflow according to driving conditions and driver demand to provide optimum boost at all times, so there's always plenty of torque whenever needed. Keeping the turbo cool and at optimal operating temperature is a top-mounted inter cooler that is air fed by a bonnet scoop.

The new Hilux 3.0G is also fitted with a fuel cooler to reduce the operating temperature of the diesel fuel that is not consumed and returned to the fuel tank. Because the engine now features more power, it also generates more heat, so with the fuel cooler, the viscosity of the diesel fuel is not reduced and the fuel delivery efficiency can be maintained.

The new Hilux is also only available with a 4-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission (ECT) and a part-time 4x4 system with High and Low ranges in the chain-driven transfer case. The 4x4 High range can be selected from 2WD mode while the vehicle is in motion at speeds of up to 80km/h. However, selection of the Low range must be done at speeds below 8km/h or while stationary.

Inside the new Hilux is fitted with a high quality interior which looks and feels like it will last through a rampage into, around, and out of the Borneo rainforest. And if that's not entertaining enough for you, it comes with a new 2-DIN audio unit with USB port to play your favorite tunes and six speakers and two tweeters which have been thoughtfully positioned for optimum sound reproduction in the cabin.

After the launch we were given a quick run around Kota Kinabalu, capital of the state of Sabah. But since the car was built for rough terrains, driving it on tarmac was naturally comfortable and the huge cabin provided plenty of space, a combination that, if it weren't for the ride height, gave off the impression that we were seated in a large saloon car.

Power delivery was expectantly smooth and plentiful with the audible zing of the turbo providing plenty of motivation to keep the pedal floored. On rugged terrains and on full load, we have no doubt that the 3.0G will have no problems at putting the power down to get the job done, whatever it may be.

Speaking at the event, Mr Kuah Kock Heng, President of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd said, " the current generation Toyota Hilux was introduced in 2005 and has been very successful in meeting expectations. We have sold more than 69,000 units, making it the most popular choice amongst Malaysian 4x4 buyers. Our aim is to sell around 600 units per month". Till now, UMW Toyota has already received more than 1000 orders from its customers.

The on-the-road price with insurance for Sabah is RM106, 734.60 and RM106,962 for Sarawak while for Peninsular Malaysia is an even RM106,000.

It also comes with a 3-year warranty or the first 100,000km traveled, whichever comes first. The new 3-liter Hilux will be available at all Toyota showrooms throughout Malaysia from 8th October 2010.

would like it if UMW brought in the manual version as well...
automatic GB,not really good for real offroad trips...

I am a true fan of Hilux, ever since the Top Gear :driver: trued to crash it in numerous episodes, and guess what, it turned out it is invincible. I am happy to see all the improvements they made to the newest model.
