Hello I’m looking at purchasing a 17 x 7.5“ aftermarket rim for my 2015 Mini Cooper hardtop.
I want to put summer tires on what is the best tire
205/40r17
215/40r17
Some people have talk to see the 205 is too narrow but the 215 would be good ???

I google and for 2015 mini cooper shows 205/45R17. 40 series might be too small

The Mini is already pretty hard riding. If you downsize to 40 it's going to add to the harshness

max size for 7.5"jj rim is 235 width...

but really optimum width is 225...

with 215 is a little bit stretch...but nothing dangerous...

215 or 225 would be the better fit for 7.5jj rims. 225/45/17 I think might be too big if your stock is only 205/45/17 coz sidewall is already 0.9cm taller. If 215/45/17 then will be a bit more comfortable than the stock 205/45/17 coz sidewall will be about 0.5cm higher but still not too big. If 225/40/17 will be slightly less comfortable than 205/45/17 coz sidewall reduced by about 0.2cm.

My original tire and wheels is 195-65-15 so going to stick with 215 -40-17 summer tires if I don’t like ride I’ll switch to 215-45-17 next summer. Car is total stock right now the summer I plan on putting coil over suspension on it

If original is 195/65R15 then 215/45R17 is not a problem. In fact 215/40R17 is too small already. 225/45R17 also can fit, but scare only the width will scrub your fender. 215/45R17 also have many tyre choices.....

I don’t understand how 215-40-17 is to small 215-45-17 isn’t that much bigger

I don’t understand how 215-40-17 is to small 215-45-17 isn’t that much bigger
215/45 has sidewall height of around 9.7cm (21.5cm X 45% = 9.7cm) while 215/40 only has sidewall height of 8.6cm (21.5cm x 40% = 8.6cm). So the radius is smaller by 1.1cm, meaning overall/outer diameter is smaller by 2.2cm!

Now compared to your stock size 195/65/15, the overall diameter is actually even bigger at 63.5cm while 215/45/17 is only 62.5cm. Imagine if using 215/40/17 which is only 60.4cm, it will look so small! Diameter wise, actually then the best match are either 205/50/17 or 225/45/17. If use 205/50/17 then easier to clear but if 225/45/17 then you need to make sure you get rims with more precise offset so it would not rub. Ideally you should then use 205/50/17 but this size is much more rare, while 225/45/17 is much more common.

You can play around with this tire conversion calculator to understand better what I've said above:

So I went with 215-45-17. So it make it look bigger on the car can I go with so 215 -55-17 and clear wheele wells without a problem. I want to stats to look better make the car look better without. Affecting the wheel wells on the steering I don’t want to be R affecting the wheel wells on the steering I don’t want to be Rob ib so if I went with 215-55-17 next time will it ride better make stances look better

Cannot use 215/55/17, way too big diameter at 5% bigger than stock size. In general, you should not exceed 3% bigger tolerance compared to your stock size. If too big diameter then your car will suffer from poor acceleration, fuel consumption, and braking. Just check the calculator I gave you above, it will show you the calculation when you play around with different sizes.
